The Hudson Valley Hackerspace

Start Making

The Mid-Hudson Valley needs a place for hackers and makers to share tools, space, knowledge, and skills.

squidwrench has been sharing knowledge and ideas since January 2010. We've had expos and workshops, and random get togethers. In 2013 we teamed up with Studio 81 to provide the space and greater access to tools.

Whether you're a programmer, an electonics whiz, a graphic designer, or a sculptor with a penchant for blinkenlights, you probably have something to share. Check out our events and our photos to get an idea of what we already do, or come hang out at one of our Weekly Doings to see what other cool things we could do together.

Our Events

At its heart, squidwrench is driven by our events. We host workshops to focus on teaching each other new tricks. We host Code and a Movie Nights and other events to just hang out and work on our own projects, and occasionally we host parties just for socializing.

Here is a sample of some of the regular and recurring events that we have:

Weekly Doing

Got a project? Want to find out what Squidwrench is all about? Weekly Doings are our open meetings, held every Tuesday at 7pm. (Meetings are currently online-only. We're still working on what our return to in-person meetings will be like.) These are a time for working on your project, checking out the projects of others, and general socializing.

Weekly Doings are open to members and non-members. Come hang out, see the shop, and talk to other hackers and makers. If you can, RSVP at meetup to let us know you're planning to stop by.

Electronics Soldering Workshops

Whether you're a seasoned vet or squishy green newbie, we've got the workshop for you. Every month we hold workshops specifically to improve you soldering skills.

Experienced folks will show beginners how to assemble kits or practice pieces that we'll have available. We'll cover everything from basic through-hole soldering to very fine pitch surface mount devices.

We have a few soldering irons with a selection of tips, and a hot air station available to participants. RSVPs at meetup are always helpful. If you don't have a project of your own that you're working on, RSVP and drop us a comment so that we can have the right materials ready for you.

Blacksmithing

We haven't actually done this, yet. But we will if there's interest! If this is something you want to do, come on out and let us know.

Code and a Movie

Primarily a members night, Code and a Movie is our chance to socialize and still get stuff done.

The hacker community may be small but it possesses the skills that are driving the global economies of the future... Hackers often describe what they do as playfully creative problem solving.
